Argentina Government Faced Lawsuit Over Metrology Privatization

State workers' union sues Milei's government for dismantling INTI's Legal Metrology Program, threatening public safety and hundreds of jobs.

Argentina Government Faced Lawsuit Over Metrology Privatization

Buenos Aires, November 19 (NA) – The National Government has received a judicial summons to annul Resolution 213/25 of the National Institute of Industrial Technology (INTI), recently published, which dismantles and eliminates the functions of the Legal Metrology Program. This program was in charge of controlling and regulating tools or elements with national regulations, such as fuel dispensers, commercial scales, and medical instruments. This judicial request was made by the Association of State Workers (ATE), who took legal action against the management of Javier Milei and his objective to privatize any possible state dependency. The general secretary of ATE, Rodolfo Aguiar, stated that this measure "not only puts hundreds of jobs at risk," but also "attacks the security" of the entire population. "The Government decided to advance with the emptying out of one of the Institute's most sensitive areas. We never imagined we would reach a moment where a kilogram is no longer a kilogram, or that at the gasoline pumps, a liter is not really a liter," the union leader concluded. This resolution covers a clear attempt at privatization. "It is striking that all control and oversight functions are attacked haphazardly," he pointed out. Regarding the consequences of this Government decision, he maintained that it is "evident" that there will be "serious and concrete" consequences for the daily operation of various companies, and furthermore, "millions of citizens may be affected." The Legal Metrology Program directly impacts the daily life of the population since, among other tasks, it carries out the controls for the correct measurement of breathalyzers, speed guns used to detect fines, commercial scales, and fuel dispensers, among others. From ATE they warned that, from this Government's decision, this sector of INTI "ceases its activities of approving models and also the certification of the correct operation and measurement" of the instruments currently in use. "It seems incredible."
